Arri vs Red: Is One Better Than The Other?

When it comes to creating truly beautiful films, having the right equipment is essential. When it comes to the top tier of camera manufacturers, Red and Arri are the two that every filmmaker and producer wants – but which is the better camera? We thought we would take a closer look…

Resolution and dynamic range

Both cameras offer fantastic resolution possibilities. As digital technology continues to advance, both brands have continued to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Most Arri cameras will shoot in 4K, while the top of the range Alexa systems can go higher. On the other hand, Red is known for its innovation, offering higher resolution systems such as the Dragon Vista Vision 8K camera.

Image

When it comes to creating captivating film, this difference in resolution does not mean there is a vastly different quality of the image. In fact, Arri cameras are renowned for offering some of the best images in the business, thanks to requiring very little editing to create an incredible shot.

Of course, that’s not to say the Red cameras are inferior. The camera range is fantastic for creating natural or moody shots, helping to create captivating scenes for viewers.

Red and Arri both have cameras that are Netflix approved, with the full list available here.

Handling

When it comes to accessories, the Red range is particularly in-depth, helping to make their range far more versatile. However, Arri does have a reputation for being more reliable.
